How does this team continue to stay at the top like they do every year? Very cool looking at their roster how many Iowa kids are on there. Most of their team/tradition is with homegrown Iowa kids. Of course they have some great talent out side of Iowa also but I found it amazing how many Iowa kids they have. Great job!
Because they have the best coaches! They let their guy's wrestle their own style. They don't try to change them or tell them they can't use a certain move. They will loose a lot of talent after this year but they will still be at the top next year. They have a lot of good backups right now.
I think there are good coaches everywhere but Wartburg seems to have the ability to bring in some top-level talent that gives them a crazy amount of depth and it shows in the results.
I think in general D3 wrestling tends to get overlooked but there are some great competitors and great matches going on across the division. You go to an open tournament or a D3 invitational and you tend to see lots of familiar names of former Iowa high school wrestlers and some great match-ups. The plus side is most of the schools live stream their dual meets online which makes it easy to watch without traveling or really taking any time out of your day (for example I see Wartburg has undefeated Loras coming to town tonight, which will be live streamed). To me there’s just a little something about D3 wrestling that I admire – these guys are not getting scholarships and probably never going to get any high level of recognition or fame for their efforts, but continue to plug away out of love for the sport.
Wartburg did it again by winning their regional by over 50 points. They had 8 champs and are sending 9 out of 10 qualifiers to the Nationals March 9th. Way to go Knights and the coaching team. They have a tremendous following for all their meets. Very dedicated parents, fans, and alumni. Good luck in Ohio!
I found this at least worth a passing interest… d3wrestle lists off the DIII national qualifiers by home state - www.d3wrestle.com/?p=12540. They show Iowa at #6 with 14 qualifiers. Quite a bit behind the leaders of PA at 25, NJ 24, etc. Personally I think this isn’t really a solid reflection of the strength of high school wrestlers in Iowa with as unbalanced as the regionals are, so you have a lot of folks staying home that probably would have qualified at other regionals. Not to mention (sticking with the Wartburg theme of this thread) that you probably have a few situations where someone is riding the bench that could have qualified at another regional.
Don’t misunderstand me here… I’m not in any way trying to say that DIII results are a great indication of the strength of high school wrestling in the state, just thought the stats were interesting.

This will be a nail bitter this year! Wartburg lost some really good wrestlers but the backup are really going to shock people this year! This dual is as good as any D1 dual if not better and cant wait for it this year!
Metzger if you really know any of those boys that you feel so comfortable talking about. Then you would know the last thing any of them would do would be to sling mud at each other and I'm guessing their is a lot of respect amongst them. I would think that is what would start tearing down the tradition at Wartburg. They seem to have something figured out. I wish them all luck, College wrestling is hard enough without all the I heard this, and I heard that, and the truth is you have no clue! That is how a rumor gets started which I'm sure you know. My guess is you know one of them boys and none of the others, otherwise you would know that Doebel has more funk than all those other boys combined. Wrestling usually eliminates those conversations anyway. I hope they all have a great year and their hard work pays off.

Well said vision! They are so close that I have seen one wrestler give up his spot to wrestle at a tournament so his family could watch him wrestle!!! Great group of kids and they truly are family!!! Nothing like a lot of the D1 schools!!!!
The Intermat ratings are out and they have Wartburg at #4 with Augsburg sitting at #i. Wartburg has 4 rated wrestlers in the preseason but there were 4 or 5 that sat in behind the starters of last year who had impressive wins. The season starts a week from Wednesday and then they wrestle at the Luther Open 2 weeks from today. Should be able to see some of those that paid their dues last year.
